Alberto Guardi was born on September 21, 1933 in Milan, Italy. He
was Franco and Isabella Guardi's second son and fifth of five
children. Alberto Guardi's older brother, Tomasso, became heir to
the family's commodity business while his life took a more artistic
path. Aided by the family's success, Guardi's parents recognized and
nurtured his artistic skills early. His parents provided him with an
excellent art education, hiring the best teachers available. They
also helped launch his artistic career by sponsoring his early
exhibitions. Guardi was soon able to support himself with his
earnings from his artwork, and no longer required his family's
assistance. Because of his immediate success, and because demand for
his work was so great from the beginning of his career, he never
sold a painting directly to a private collector. He sold all of his
paintings exclusively through art agents and galleries. Guardi's
paintings are permanently on exhibition in galleries in Madrid,
Paris, Monte Carlo, Rome, Switzerland, and, since 1999, the United
States as well.
