Ian was inspired to take up painting late in his life by the early
French impressionists. It was furthur enhanced by a trip to France and to
Monet's home in Giverny. He started painting in watercolours, then
acrylics, and on to oils with either brushes or palette knives.
His technique with the palette knife and the use of bright colours
were influenced by the great expressionists. Whether Ian uses
knives, brushes, or both on his canvas it will depend upon the full
impact or statement that he wishes to make with his art. By using
different unique techniques his canvasses allow him to express
himself freely and this stands out the most in the texture and the
richly colours that are painted landscapes and gardens scenes. Ian
has painted local and international landscapes as well as floral and
garden compositions for his clients. Many of his paintings have been
commissioned or consigned and are now hanging in private collections
throughout Australia. Ian's love of bright colours comes from
the strong light and colour of the Australian landscapes and ever
changing environment in which he lives.
